Located in the village of Odemira, in the Símplicio Neighbourhood, the Camacho Costa Cineteatro is a notable building in the local cultural landscape. Its position in the municipality of Odemira makes it a reference point for the artistic and civic life of the region.
Although the Cineteatro building is a 20th-century construction, the site where it stands has a much older history. During the renovation and reopening works in 2005, significant archaeological remains were discovered. These findings revealed that the area was inhabited more than two thousand years ago, with evidence from the Iron Age and the Roman era. Among the elements found, a ditch carved into the rock stands out, believed to have been part of an ancient defensive wall of the settlement, dated between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. Inside this ditch, a varied collection was gathered, including fragments of amphorae, fine pottery, Roman coins, and other bronze materials, as well as animal osteological remains. Following archaeological analysis, the remains were re-covered, allowing for the continuation of the works and the preservation of the subsoil.
The Camacho Costa Cineteatro plays a central role in Odemira's cultural life. While still functioning as a cinema, the space is versatile and hosts a wide range of events. With a capacity for two hundred and seventy-six spectators, the Cineteatro hosts shows, conferences, and seminars. It is a place where local traditions, such as Cante Alentejano, are celebrated, and where the community gathers to experience diverse forms of art and culture.
The Cineteatro's name is an homage to Camacho Costa, a Portuguese actor who passed away in 2003, thus perpetuating his memory and artistic legacy. Built in the 20th century, the building underwent a period of closure before being renovated and reopening its doors in September 2005. This rehabilitation not only modernised its infrastructures but also consolidated its importance as a historical and cultural landmark in the village of Odemira.
