The Alcaria dos Javazes Museum Centre is located in a small village of the same name, part of the locality of Espírito Santo, in the municipality of Mértola. Situated about twenty kilometers south of the municipal seat, this space is set in a peaceful rural environment, characteristic of the Alentejo interior.
Its location in an old village house allows visitors a direct immersion into the context the museum seeks to represent, offering an authentic perspective on past local life.
This museum center stands out for its unique approach to daily life. Its collections are not limited to presenting objects; each piece tells a story, revealing the experiences, memories, and challenges of other times. The space transforms common utensils into testimonies of the simplicity, modesty, and, at times, the difficulties that shaped the lives of rural communities.
It is an invitation to reflect on a time when days were lived differently, less hurried and more connected to the essence of things.
The museum's originality lies in how it establishes a deep connection between the object, the people who used it, and the territory where those lives unfolded. The collection is the result of the dedication of a private collector, Orlando José, who, throughout his life, gathered these fragments of history. His passion allowed these memories to be preserved and shared, many of which would otherwise be forgotten.
The center presents thematic temporary exhibitions, allowing different aspects of this rich collection to be explored and new narratives to come to life periodically.
The building itself, which houses the Alcaria dos Javazes Museum Centre, is an integral part of the experience. It is an old village house, maintaining its original structure with a patio, well, and oven, elements that refer to the region's vernacular architecture.
The museological intervention skillfully harmonized the robustness of schist, a traditional material, with more modern lines, creating a path that traverses centuries of history and architecture. This fusion gives the space a unique atmosphere, where past and present coexist in dialogue.
