The Vidigueira Municipal Museum is located in Praça Vasco da Gama, in a central area of Vidigueira village. Its location integrates into the local urban environment, facilitating access for those exploring on foot.
The Vidigueira Municipal Museum is housed in the building that was once the Vasco da Gama Primary School. This property, with a long history as an educational establishment (from 1884 to 1991), underwent a process of recovery and adaptation to accommodate the museum function, having been inaugurated in July 2004. When visiting the museum, you find yourself in the same space where generations of Vidigueira residents learned.
The museum organizes its exhibition into two distinct thematic sections that invite visitors to explore different facets of Vidigueira's history. One of them delves into the history of primary education in the municipality, creating a link with the very building that houses the museum. The second section offers a portrait of the economic, social, and cultural life of the 20th century, with a particular focus on the decades from 1930 onwards, depicting daily life through the representation of old crafts, commerce, agriculture, and local small industry.
The museum's collection is largely the result of generous donations from the local community. These objects, formerly belonging to artisans, merchants, farmers, and small industrialists, constitute an ethnographic collection that helps reconstruct the memory and daily life of Vidigueira in the recent past. The exhibited pieces showcase the various crafts and professions that shaped the social and economic life of the village, in addition to agricultural activity.
