The Romanesque Bridge is located in the tranquil region of Quinta de Santa Justa, on the northern outskirts of the city of Moura. Situated in a rural plain area, the bridge is set amidst a landscape dominated by extensive olive groves and abundant natural vegetation, characteristic of the Alentejo lowlands.
Although popularly referred to as "Roman", the history of this bridge holds a fascinating debate. Despite some nearby vestiges suggesting the existence of an ancient Roman road connecting Évora to the Guadiana River, the bridge itself, due to its constructive style, is believed by some historians to have been erected only during the Portuguese Restoration of Independence period. Regardless of its exact chronology, this structure is recognized for its historical and patrimonial value, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1944.
Of modest dimensions, the Romanesque Bridge exhibits a simple and robust architecture, perfectly integrated into its surroundings. Its deck, with a horizontal profile and protected by low masonry parapets, rests on a single semi-circular arch, with a span of approximately six meters. The construction reveals the use of traditional regional materials, such as the schist and granite voussoirs that compose the arch, lending it an authenticity and durability that have stood the test of time.
Visiting the Romanesque Bridge is discovering a peaceful corner in the heart of Alentejo. Its setting, far from urban bustle, provides a calm and isolated environment, ideal for those seeking a moment of landscape contemplation. The olive groves and riparian vegetation surrounding the bridge create a picturesque setting, inviting for a stroll or simply to appreciate the serenity of the place, enjoying the unique light that bathes this part of southern Portugal.
