Situated in the Quinta de Santa Justa Urbanization, in the municipality of Moura, the Olive Grove Garden is located in an area that mirrors the Alentejo landscape. This urban location, in Moura, allows close contact with the essence of the region, where the presence of olive groves on the horizon is a distinctive characteristic and a symbol of local identity.
The Olive Grove Garden was conceived as a space that celebrates Alentejo's deep connection to olive culture and olive oil production. This place honors olive growing, an activity with historical roots and a central role in the economy and daily life of the Moura region. It is a recognition of the lasting importance that the olive tree has in the life of the community and in the landscape that surrounds it.
The garden is also a tribute to Miguel Hernández, a Spanish poet whose fate crossed with the municipality of Moura. Known for writing about olive trees and their workers, Hernández was detained by Portuguese authorities in this region in 1939, while trying to escape the Spanish Civil War. He was subsequently handed over to Spanish forces, dying in prison at the age of 31. His name perpetuates the memory of a figure poetically and historically linked to the olive tree.
Spanning approximately 1600 square meters, the Olive Grove Garden hosts diverse varieties of olive trees, with a particular focus on those most representative of Alentejo, such as the cordovil, the verdeal de Serpa or Moura, the galega grado de Serpa, the galega vulgar, and the verdeal galega. The garden is further enriched by the presence of several aromatic and medicinal herbs from the region, as well as some climbing plants, offering a glimpse into the botanical richness associated with the olive grove ecosystem.
