Situated in the town of Moura, in Alentejo, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is located in the area known as Quinta de Santo António da Pipa. The site is integrated into the urban fabric, near the castle, and is accessible via Rua do Carmo. The architectural ensemble of the church and the former conventual gatehouse is preceded by a small walled churchyard, adorned with volutes and sculpted elements that invite contemplation.
The history of this temple dates back to the 13th century, more precisely to 1251, when the first Carmelite friars settled in Portugal and chose Moura as their initial establishment. This original convent is considered the pioneer of the order in Portuguese territory and, it is believed, served as a model for the design of the Carmo Convent in Lisbon. Throughout the centuries, the building underwent various significant remodelling, reflecting the different artistic and historical eras that shaped the region.
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo exhibits an interesting fusion of styles, with distinctive elements of the Manueline and Mannerism. Manueline features can be observed in the columns separating the naves, in the arches accessing the side chapels, in the pulpit, and in the holy water font. Mannerism is notable in the church's main portal and the convent's facade. Inside, the church features three naves and several side chapels, each with its own peculiarities.
One of the most unique aspects lies in the vault of the second chapel, on the Gospel side. There, an unusual decoration is discovered, composed of 17th-century tile panels depicting winged angel heads with vibrant colours, and the inclusion of fifteen faience plates of different sizes. This composition is understood as a popular adaptation of ceiling ornamentation featuring Chinese porcelain.
In addition to this chapel, other artistic details include 17th-century polychrome tiles in various sections of the temple and in the sacristy. The chancel, built in the 18th century, stands out for a Joanine-style carved altarpiece and traces of mural paintings that enrich the interior atmosphere.
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is widely recognized as the most expressive monument in Moura and one of the most important in Baixo Alentejo. This religious complex is the birthplace of a profound devotion to Nossa Senhora do Carmo in the locality, which manifests annually in highly significant festivities. The celebrations in honour of the patron saint are one of the greatest expressions of faith in the region, demonstrating the enduring and uninterrupted connection of the community to this remarkable religious and cultural heritage.
