The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows is situated on high ground, in the area of Mesquita, in Espírito Santo, in the municipality of Mértola. Positioned to the west of the village, its strategic location allows for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, including the imposing Mértola Castle and the urban area. The elevation of the terrain where it is situated provides it with a broad perspective, making it stand out in the Alentejo landscape.
This religious building has an unusual history. Its origins date back to the medieval era, when the site was occupied by a Moorish watchtower. This military structure, given its strategic defensive position north of Mértola, explains the peculiar and austere shape of the chapel that succeeded it. The building presents an essentially cubic shape, with remarkable simplicity. The exterior is marked by a straight lintel door, a rectangular window above it, and a simple bell-gable. The chapel is crowned by a rounded dome and small pinnacles at the corners, distinguishing itself by its rectilinear and functional architecture, which is unusual for places of worship.
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, this chapel carries a particular symbolism, often associated with elevated places and water. The choice of invocation reflects an ancient tradition, linked to the memory of a miracle that occurred in Rome, where snow fell in mid-summer. In Mértola, this devotion takes on a special meaning: in times of drought, inhabitants used to climb this hill to ask for rain, demonstrating the deep connection of the community to the chapel and its protection. Annually, on August 5th, a pilgrimage takes place with this site as its destination, reinforcing the tradition and faith of those who visit this space.
