The Blacksmith's Forge Nucleus is located in Mértola, in the Além-Rio area, integrated into one of the town's most characteristic and historic streets. Its location allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of an older Mértola, in an area that was once an important center of artisanal activity. The space is discreetly inserted into the urban fabric, maintaining the authenticity of its surroundings.
This museological nucleus offers a perspective on the ancient art of forging. The space recreates a traditional blacksmith's workshop, as it functioned in times past. Here, it is possible to closely observe the essential instruments of this profession, such as the bellows that fanned the forge's fire, the anvil where metal was shaped, and the workbench, elements that help to understand the daily labor of the artisans who mastered iron.
The Blacksmith's Forge Nucleus preserves the memory of "Ti Brito", Mértola's last blacksmith, whose work and life left a mark on the community. The space is not just an exhibition of tools, but a testament to the social life that bustled in the old Rua da Afreita, where it was located. This street was known not only for its various workshops but also for being a meeting and gathering point, a stage for festivities like the "mastros" (maypoles) and dances that enlivened weekends with local artists. It is a small fragment that reflects a part of the history and identity of Mértola's inhabitants.
