The Chapel of Our Lord of Calvary stands in the Além-Rio area, belonging to the enchanting locality of Mértola, in the heart of the municipality of the same name. Situated on an elevated point, the chapel offers a serene setting and allows glimpses of the village's urban and natural surroundings, positioning itself as a discreet viewpoint over the Alentejo landscape.
This place of worship holds a unique history, suggesting origins in other eras. The chapel is recognized for having been, in the past, a marabout, a type of Islamic construction with religious or funerary function. This transformation of a pre-existing building confers upon it a layer of historical and cultural interest, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped the Mértola region throughout the centuries.
The chapel stands out for its centralized plan, a characteristic that points to a careful and somewhat erudite design. Its construction is simple, yet with details that reveal specific architectural intentions. Inside, the chancel is highlighted by an elegant semicircular arch, which frames the main devotional space.
At the heart of the chapel, the altar features a unique glass-enclosed niche. Within this protected space, important cult images are found, namely representations of the Crucified Lord, the Lord of the Column, and Ecce Homo. These figures invite contemplation and reflection, offering a glimpse into local religiosity and sacred art.
