In the Alentejo region, a short distance from the village of Castro Verde, lies Monte do Serro. This site is set within a vast plain landscape, characteristic of the Baixo Alentejo, where the view stretches without significant obstacles. It is a predominantly rural environment, marked by serenity and the expansive horizon, inviting contemplation of the surrounding nature.
Monte do Serro is the place where, according to tradition, the Battle of Ourique unfolded in 1139. This confrontation was a crucial turning point in Portugal's history. Here, the forces of D. Afonso Henriques secured a victory that not only marked a fundamental step towards independence from Moorish rule but also led to his acclamation as the first King of Portugal. The memory of this singular event is deeply intertwined with this landscape, which witnessed the birth of a nation.
The historical importance of Monte do Serro is marked at the site itself. It is here that a pilgrimage sanctuary is located which, over the centuries, has served to remember and honor the legendary battle. Although one of the most well-known commemorative pillars, which was erected here at the end of the 18th century, is currently in the village of Castro Verde, Monte do Serro retains the essence of being the sacred ground where the foundations of Portugal were laid. The atmosphere of the place invites reflection on the courage and determination that shaped the destiny of a people.
