Situated in the heart of Serpa's historic core, the Parish Church stands majestically in a prominent position, just a few steps from the ancient walls. It opens onto a wide square, also known as Largo de Santa Maria, which offers an inviting perspective of the city, connecting by a staircase to Praça da República. Its presence is a visible and central landmark in Serpa's urban landscape.
The history of the Parish Church of Serpa, also referred to as Igreja de Santa Maria or Matriz, dates back to the 14th century, with its early construction being a testament to the village's medieval past. There are indications suggesting that this temple was built on the foundations of an ancient Arab mosque, adding a layer of fascinating historical continuity to the site. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the church underwent significant transformations, which largely shaped its current appearance. It was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1984, recognizing its unquestionable heritage value.
On the exterior, the church's facade is imposing with a notable entrance portal, flanked by columns supporting the images of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. To the left, a quadrangular bell tower stands out. Curiously, this tower encloses a older cylindrical structure within its interior, an architectural vestige that may correspond to the original minaret of the first mosque, suggesting a transition of cultures and beliefs over time.
Upon crossing the portal, an interior divided into three naves is discovered, supported by robust arches and columns. The various side chapels reveal a particular decorative richness, with beautiful examples of gilded carving, evidencing the luxury of the Baroque period. The main chapel, which stands out in the ensemble, was rebuilt between the 16th and 17th centuries, even serving as a pantheon for the influential Melo family. On its walls, one can admire a lining of 17th-century polychrome tiles, with rare color patterns that visually enrich the space, complemented by altarpieces in carving and marble, and various sculptural elements.
