Messejana's Main Church / Church of Our Lady of Remedies

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Beja > Aljustrel > Messejana > Bairro de São Brás

Location:

The Igreja Matriz de Messejana, also known as the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, is situated in the São Brás neighbourhood, on a slope that marks the village's presence in the Alentejo landscape. This elevated position offers a remarkable view over the vast surrounding plain and the white houses of Messejana. The building is located near the ruins of the old local castle, sharing the highest point of the settlement.

Reaching this location involves traversing the tranquil streets of the village, appreciating the typical Alentejo urban environment. The church stands out in Messejana's silhouette, serving as an easily identifiable landmark.

History and Origins:

The church's history, in its current configuration, dates back to the mid-18th century, a period when it was built or underwent significant reconstruction. However, the site where it stands has a much older occupation, with discoveries of a Roman-era necropolis nearby.

The building underwent significant alterations over time. In the 19th century, the narthex was added to the main facade, and a side chapel was built, completed in 1809. Historical records mention the existence of tombs and plaques with local family coats of arms inside.

Architecture and Interior Details:

The church's architecture displays a fusion of styles that reflect the periods of its construction and modifications, namely Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. It is characterized by a compact structure, with a single nave and a vaulted chancel, exhibiting notable verticality.

Elements such as the pilasters and quoins topped with flametops lend a distinct visual rhythm to the exterior walls. Inside, the richness of the decoration is concentrated in the altarpieces, which stand out for their gilded and polychrome carving. The side chapel on the Gospel side, dating from the early 19th century, introduces touches of neoclassical language, while the main altar, from the 18th century, displays Rococo details.
