The Church of Senhor da Ladeira is situated on Rua do Senhor, one of the streets in the village of Vila Ruiva, in the municipality of Cuba. Its name suggests the topographical position of the site where it is built.
The current construction of the Church of Senhor da Ladeira dates back to the year 1720. However, the history of the site may be older. There are mentions in historical records that point to the existence of a much older temple, possibly predating this one, described as an "ancient church" with a style that some sources associate with the Roman period. It is even believed that this primitive temple may have been the village's first mother church, dedicated to Senhor da Ladeira.
After a period of abandonment, the church underwent restoration work in recent years, which allowed for the recovery of its state of conservation and made its interior accessible to visitors.
This temple features sober architectural lines. It consists of a single nave, covered by a barrel vault. Both inside and out, the predominance of white stands out, a result of a complete whitewashing of the surfaces. The main facade is topped by a raised gable, flanked by pilasters. At the center, a pediment is illuminated by a framed, circular oculus, and is flanked by decorative elements at the top (acroteria) topped by pyramidal pinnacles.
Inside the nave, the structure reflects its simplicity, showing no visible traces of the existence of side altars.
With the recent restoration intervention, the church's interior is now available for visits, allowing one to appreciate the simple architectural features and the atmosphere of the space. There is an intention for this place to host, in the near future, a museum core dedicated to the religiosity and devotional traditions of the Vila Ruiva community.
