The Church of Santa Brígida is located in Marmelar, a small urbanization of the locality of Pedrógão, in the municipality of Vidigueira, in the heart of Alentejo. This temple stands in an isolated manner, on the northern edge of the settlement, benefiting from a tranquil and rural setting, characteristic of the Alentejo landscape, with its plains and wide horizons.
Built during the first half of the 16th century, the Church of Santa Brígida is a representative example of the religious architecture of the period in the region, exhibiting a distinct Manueline-Mudéjar style. Its construction stands out for its fortified character, visible in the scaling of the exterior volumes, the robust conical buttresses, and the elaborate chamfered merlons that top the structure. This architectural typology gives the building a singular presence and a deep connection to local history.
Inside, the church features a single nave leading to a square-plan chancel. The ceiling of this chapel is crowned by a ribbed vault, a notable characteristic of Manueline constructive art. Its walls still preserve traces of ancient mural paintings, artistic elements that offer a glimpse into the temple's decorative past. The Church of Santa Brígida holds a historical peculiarity: it is the only parish church in Portugal dedicated to Santa Brígida, patron saint of what was once the municipality of Marmelar, emphasizing its importance in the national religious heritage.
