The church is located in the village of Santa Bárbara de Padrões, in the municipality of Castro Verde, Portugal.
The church is a small building with a sober appearance and elements typical of rural churches in the Alentejo region. It has a main facade with a straight lintel portal and a square bell tower. The churchyard is delimited by a wall with a wooden cross.
The church has a single nave divided into five ogival-shaped bays. Highlights include the side altarpieces and the chapel dedicated to São Miguel, with a barrel vaulted ceiling. The altars have gilded and polychrome carvings, and traces of mural paintings are still visible on the walls.
The church houses several images, with the image of Santa Bárbara being one of the most important, known for its alleged miracles. In the churchyard, there is a menhir used as a seat.
The site where the church is located has been occupied since Roman times, and vestiges of this period have been found nearby. The church was built in the 16th century, on the ruins of an old Muslim mosque. The bell tower was added later. The church underwent major works in the 17th century.
The church was proposed for classification as cultural heritage, but the process was archived as it was not considered of national value. However, it is still a monument of historical and religious interest in the region.
In 2019, a restoration intervention and electrification of the church bells was being planned, financed by the company Somincor, responsible for the Neves Corvo Mine.
