Located in the village of Vila Ruiva, municipality of Cuba, the Church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia is situated in one of its main squares. The building is integrated into the urban environment of the village, standing out in the cobbled space that surrounds it.
The origin of this church is linked to the foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Vila Ruiva in 1571. Initially, the building served a dual role: it functioned as a place of worship and also as a hospital, providing assistance to those in need. Over time, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, the church underwent significant alterations that shaped its current appearance, combining Mannerist and Baroque features. The entrance portals, for example, date from 1733, and the bell tower was added in 1788.
The building follows the common typology of Misericórdia churches in Alentejo, with a longitudinal plan. It features a main nave, enriched by side chapels, and culminates in the chancel. The west-facing facade, though simple, draws attention with its Baroque finial, decorated with volutes and topped by a stone cross. Inside, the high choir above the entrance is visible.
Upon entering the church, one's gaze discovers artistic details that tell its story. Although fragmented, remnants of old patterned tiles, in blue and yellow tones, which once covered part of the walls, still survive. The main highlight, however, lies in the mural paintings that adorn the chancel. These paintings, dating from the second half of the 17th century, illustrate important biblical scenes, such as the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet. The gilded carved altarpiece, added during the 1732 renovation, also contributes to the visual richness of this space.
