The church stands in the center of the village of Salvada, in the heart of the deep Alentejo, on a slightly elevated point that dominates the surrounding streets. Around it, there is a traditional cluster of white and yellow whitewashed houses, typical of the rural settlements in the municipality of Beja.
In the immediate vicinity, the Alentejo countryside appears in gentle plains and hills, creating a tranquil setting. From the churchyard, the view extends to cork oak forests and olive groves, reinforcing the sense of direct contact with the region's agricultural landscape.
The primitive chapel was likely built towards the end of the Middle Ages, as attested by records from a visit in 1534. In the 16th century, the community's growth led to successive enlargements, and in the 17th century, structural reinforcement works were carried out.
In 1755, the construction of a new chancel and a sacristy was planned, under the direction of master stonemason Manuel Nunes, from Beja. These works left their mark on the floor plan and architectural style, still visible today in the building's volume.
The main facade, painted in white and blue, features a curved gable topped by volutes and a small circular oculus flanked by tiles. The wooden door is set within a simple portal, topped by a stone lintel.
Inside, the elaborately carved wooden altarpieces stand out, showing influence from the traditional collection in Évora: the main altar features turned columns and a sculpted tabernacle, while the side tribunes house niches for images of popular devotion.
The front courtyard offers open space, ideal for admiring the facade and capturing photographs without urban interference. The Alentejo light highlights the contrast between the white of the walls and the blue of the details.
For those who appreciate silence and simplicity, the church's surroundings invite moments of pause by the churchyard, where one can feel the discreet presence of Salvada's rural and religious tradition.
