The Church of Panoias is located in the center of the eponymous village, in the Union of Parishes of Panoias and Conceição, in the municipality of Ourique. Surrounded by a spacious landscaped area with well-trimmed hedges, it occupies a slightly elevated position that offers a view over the cork oak forests and agricultural fields typical of the Alentejo region.

Facing a tranquil square, its white façade stands out against the open sky, punctuated by blue frames. The serene atmosphere of the space allows for enjoyment of the rural surroundings and the leisurely pace of the locality.

Origin and evolution:

Erected in the 16th century, the church reflects its 16th-century heritage, with simple and robust lines. In the 18th century, it was expanded and gained Baroque features that enriched its interior and exterior volume.

This development over two centuries testifies to the continuity of devotion in Panoias and highlights the adaptation of architectural forms to the needs of the local community.

Architecture and environment:

The interior features a single nave covered by angular slabs, supported by ogival diaphragm arches that create a subtle play of light. The sober walls, devoid of excessive decoration, emphasize a sense of contemplation and solemnity.

The main façade is highlighted by its Baroque bell tower, with profiled cornices and an antique clock that marks the passing of the day. This vertical element constitutes a striking photographic subject, especially when sunlight falls upon the contrast between white and blue.
