São Clemente Fort is located in the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, in the municipality of Odemira, in Alentejo, Portugal. It was built in 1602 as a defense against pirate attacks and to protect the mouth of the Mira River. It lost its military functions in the 19th century and was sold to private individuals in 1903.
The fort is a bastioned coastal fortification, located on a rocky point on the right bank of the Mira River estuary. It has a polygonal plan, divided into two platforms with salient bastions at the corners. There is a weapons gate with a round arch and a coat of arms. The interior of the fort is composed of barracks, warehouses and a chapel. There is also an upper square with a water tower.
São Clemente Fort was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1978, being considered an ex-libris of Vila Nova de Milfontes.
The fort played a crucial role in the defense of the town against attacks by Moorish pirates and privateers. It also played a role in protecting the Mira River bar and functioned as a customs area. Its construction was motivated by the need to defend the Portuguese coast and prevent possible enemy landings.
The predominant style of the fort is Mannerist, but it also has elements that create a romantic atmosphere. Highlights include the false turret and the ivy covering on the facades. The constructive apparatus is typical of the Philippine period.
During works in the area near the fort, vestiges of a quarry used in the construction of the property were discovered. A curved masonry structure was also found, possibly linked to the fortress or the Roman period.
São Clemente Fort was part of a network of fortifications along the coastline south of the Sado River. Its construction had a significant impact on the bank of the Mira River and the safety of vessels.
After being damaged by attacks and requiring repairs, the fort underwent reconstruction works during the reign of D. João IV. Structural changes were made, including modifications to the bastion facing the river bar.
During the 18th century, the fort was equipped with artillery and a garrison of soldiers. However, throughout the 19th century, it gradually lost its military function and was sold to private individuals in 1903.
