The Odivelas Dam is nestled in the serene landscape of the Lower Alentejo, near the small village of the same name, in the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo. This vast body of water harmoniously integrates into the Alentejo plain, offering expansive views of the surrounding rural environment and the region's characteristic tranquility.
Inaugurated in 1972, the Odivelas Dam is an engineering feat built over the bed of the Ribeira de Odivelas (Odivelas Stream). Its primary function is water resource management, essential for irrigating vast agricultural fields in the area, significantly contributing to the local primary sector. The imposing dam wall, 500 meters long and 55 meters high, is a structure that retains a considerable volume of water, demonstrating the scale of this undertaking in the heart of the Alentejo.
The Odivelas Dam reservoir is a focal point for wildlife, especially various species of aquatic birds. The vast expanse of water and the surrounding banks create a diverse habitat, making it a privileged location for birdwatching throughout the year. It is possible to spot ducks, grebes, and various herons, among many other species that find refuge here. The waters are also known for the presence of fish, such as largemouth bass, attracting sport fishing enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape is characterized by an avenue of stone pines and riparian vegetation that invite moments of serenity.
In addition to its essential function, the Odivelas Dam offers an environment conducive to leisure and rest. Its serene waters are suitable for practicing non-motorized water sports, inviting activities that allow enjoyment of the landscape in harmony with nature. There are also equipped picnic areas, ideal for a day with family or friends, where one can relax and appreciate the vast Alentejo landscape, far from the hustle and bustle. It is a place to absorb the quietness and natural beauty of the region.
