Walkways of Pulo do Lobo

Location

The walkways are located in the Pulo do Lobo area, in Serpa, within the municipality of Serpa. They are installed on the left bank of the Guadiana river, next to the impressive waterfall that gives the place its name. This area is part of a region of great natural value in the Lower Alentejo, offering a striking landscape setting. Its position allows for a privileged observation of the river landscape and the characteristic rock formations of the riverbed.

The Access Structure

Designed in wood, the walkways were created to facilitate pedestrian access to the Pulo do Lobo waterfall and the bank of the Guadiana river. The structure descends the slope, totaling about three hundred steps. Along the route, there are several points where it is possible to pause and enjoy the view, making the walk more comfortable and inviting for contemplation of the natural surroundings.

The Waterfall and its Legend

The walkways lead to one of the most remarkable points of the Guadiana river: the Pulo do Lobo waterfall. The river's waters plunge from a height of approximately sixteen meters, passing through a narrow "rocky gorge". The popular legend associated with the place's name recounts that this narrow passage is so tight that a wolf could cross both banks with a single leap. This unique geological feature gives the site a scenic and narrative dimension.

Natural and Interpretive Environment

The environment in which the walkways are situated is of particular ecological interest, with conditions that favor the existence of distinct animal and plant species, some of which are not found elsewhere in the Alentejo. Along the route, there are interpretive and informative elements that help to understand the natural, environmental, and landscape richness of the place, fostering greater awareness of the importance of its conservation.
