Espaço Adães Bermudes is located in the village of Alvito, in the Tapada do Lucas neighborhood, within the municipality of the same name. The building is strategically positioned on an elevated platform that offers an interesting perspective over Rua Alexandre Herculano, proving to be a striking presence in the local urban landscape. Its location allows for easy integration into the village's discovery route.
This building, today known as Espaço Adães Bermudes, was originally designed as a primary school, one of many conceived by the notable architect Arnaldo Redondo Adães Bermudes. His work, prominent between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflects an eclectic approach with a classical foundation, always with a strong functional sense and a recognizable elegance.
The architecture of the space reveals a symmetrical design and a sober expression. Inside, there was a spacious central room, complemented by two lateral wings intended for additional uses, and a covered recreation area. The construction, traditional in character, is based on robust masonry walls and wooden roofs, demonstrating the functionality and solidity characteristic of the era and the author.
After a careful process of recovery and renovation, the old school building gained new life, transforming into a space dedicated to culture and the community. Its conversion to a cultural function underscores the value of revitalizing historic urban facilities, adapting them to the contemporary needs of the village of Alvito.
Espaço Adães Bermudes regularly hosts various cultural initiatives, such as art exhibitions. Illustrating the type of proposals that can be found here, artistic works exploring local identity have been presented, such as field notebooks with representations of regional sweets, highlighting the knowledge and products of the area. This place symbolizes the ability of simple buildings from the past to continue enriching a community's present.
