Situated near the village of Almeirim, at some distance from the town of Castro Verde, this hermitage stands isolated in the rural landscape of the municipality. It is located on a gently sloping area, near Monte dos Picachos. Its position on one of the highest points of the municipality offers a unique setting within the Alentejo plain.
The hermitage features a simple, vernacular design, with a rectangular plan and a gable roof. The main facade, facing south, has a stone portal with a straight lintel and a small oculus above it. Flanked by pilasters, the front of the building is topped by a gable, where a small bell-gable stands out in one corner.
Inside, the nave is covered by a barrel vault. Near the entrance, there is a holy water font made of stone. In the altar area, in the chancel, one can observe an oil-painted fresco altarpiece, dating from the second half of the 18th century. This fresco, in trompe-l'oeil, displays the royal coat of arms.
Historical records from the visitations of the Order of Santiago indicate the existence of a religious building at this site as early as the beginning of the 16th century. However, the current construction of the Hermitage of São Sebastião is generally attributed to the early 17th century. The alternative name by which it is known, Hermitage of São Sebastião dos Bicados, is linked to the fact that the site originally belonged to the Herdade (estate) of that name.
Additionally, archaeological remains have been discovered in the vicinity of the hermitage. These findings reveal human presence in the area since very remote periods, such as the late Neolithic or Chalcolithic, indicating possible ancient dwelling structures. Ceramics from later periods, such as Roman and medieval, were also found, demonstrating the long occupation of this territory.
In addition to its historical and architectural value, the Hermitage of São Sebastião de Almeirim is the setting for an important traditional pilgrimage. This annual event is a moment of homage to various saints, reflecting the deep devotion of the local inhabitants and the continuity of religious and cultural practices in the region.
