In Vidigueira, there is a small but significant religious monument: the Hermitage of São Rafael.
The Hermitage of São Rafael is situated on the outskirts of Vidigueira, standing out on a small elevation. It appears isolated in the landscape, surrounded by a paved and landscaped churchyard that invites a peaceful break.
Built in the early 17th century, the history of the Hermitage of São Rafael is deeply linked to the family of Vasco da Gama, the famous navigator. Tradition holds that it was erected by his descendants with a special purpose: to house an image of Saint Raphael that is said to have accompanied Vasco da Gama on his epic maritime voyage to India.
The hermitage is an interesting example of the Mannerist style in the region. It features a centralized plan and a purified cubic form, crowned by a dome. Visually, its cornerstones stand out, functioning as pilasters and topped with pyramidal pinnacles. The main façade features a straight-lintel portal, with a trabeated design, and a small bell tower.
Inside, there is a unique quadrangular space, with blind arcades on the walls that frame the windows. The altar is quite simple.
Throughout the centuries, the Hermitage of São Rafael had a troubled trajectory. In the 19th century, it was desecrated and eventually fell into an advanced state of ruin. The image that was kept there was removed.
Fortunately, throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century, the building benefited from several restoration interventions, allowing for its conservation and maintaining it as a testament to its long history.
