The Hermitage of São Pedro, now in ruins, is situated in a slightly elevated area, known as Tabelião, in the locality of Vila Nova da Baronia. Its isolated position on a hill gives it the character of a "hermitage," removed from the urban center and surrounded by the characteristic landscape of this area of the municipality of Alvito.
The initial construction of this hermitage dates back to the early 16th century. Over the centuries, the site underwent modifications; it is known, for example, that in the 18th century, works were carried out to expand the porch. These architectural remains tell part of the history and evolution of this religious site over time.
The hermitage was dedicated to Saint Peter, the apostle, a central figure in the Christian faith. Despite its current state of ruin, 17th-century documents mention the existence of mural paintings inside, alluding to this saint. These elements, even if partial or degraded, suggest the artistic richness that the space once possessed.
There is an interesting historical hypothesis related to the choice of this site for the construction of the hermitage. Due to its morphology and location, it is considered that the site might have been previously occupied by a structure from the Islamic period, possibly a kubba. The Christian edifice at this point may, therefore, represent an act of Christianization of a space already with prior significance or use.
