The Chapel of São Barão is located in the area of Corte da Velha, within the municipality of Mértola. It is situated in the mountain range that shares its name, approximately 12 kilometers from the town of Mértola.
Access to the site is via a dirt road from Corte da Velha, which may be challenging for regular passenger cars. Its isolated location, in the vastness of the Alentejo mountains, offers an atmosphere of deep tranquility and wide-ranging views of the surrounding landscape, inviting reflection and contemplation.
The history of the Chapel of São Barão is linked to an ancient place of worship, whose roots are lost in time. Although the Christian building seen today dates from the period after the Reconquista, it is believed that the site where it stands has been, since ancient times, a point of spiritual significance and connection to the landscape.
Over time, the building experienced periods of abandonment, eventually falling into ruins by the mid-20th century. However, in the 21st century, significant restoration work was carried out, first on the exterior and later, in 2004, on the interior, which restored dignity and integrity to this space of faith and heritage.
The chapel maintains a strong connection to local religious devotion, which endures to this day, serving as a living testament to the community's faith. It is the site associated with São Barão (Saint Baron), a figure of great importance to the community of Mértola, and a meeting point on pilgrimage days dedicated to this saint.
Popular narrative tells that Saint Baron was a native of Mértola and chose this desolate place to live, in deep connection with the surrounding nature. The legend also recounts that he would travel to the town weekly to ask for alms, sharing most of it with the needy, which demonstrated his charitable spirit.
He is considered the saint who intercedes for good marriages, for families, and for fertility, giving the chapel a special symbolism for the devotees who visit it seeking blessings and inspiration.
