Location and Views

Situated in the Além-Rio area, in the locality of Mértola, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows stands on a hill to the west of the village. For those arriving in Mértola from this direction, the small white building appears as a landmark crowning the landscape. Its elevated position offers a wide field of view, functioning as a remarkable viewpoint. From there, it is possible to enjoy panoramic views over the town of Mértola and its castle, which stand out against the Alentejo surroundings.

Past and Singular Architecture

The history of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows dates back to a period prior to the Christian reconquest, having originated as an ancient Moorish watchtower. This primary military function explains the building's distinct architecture: a predominantly rectilinear and cubic form, with a construction stripped of excessive ornamentation. Despite its structural simplicity, the chapel is topped by a rounded dome and its corners are adorned with small pinnacles, breaking the rigidity of its lines. The transformation of a defensive structure into a chapel is a testament to the historical layers that make up Mértola's heritage.

The Devotion to Our Lady of the Snows

The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, a Marian invocation rooted in a miracle that occurred in Rome, where it snowed on one of the city's hills in the middle of summer. This connection to snow and, by extension, to water, is particularly significant in the Baixo Alentejo region. Historically, the chapel was initially consecrated to Our Lady of Flowers, with altars dedicated to Saint Benedict and Saint Bartholomew, before adopting its current devotion. The 18th-century image of Our Lady of the Snows now occupies the center of the main altar, and the site maintains its symbolic importance for the community.

Local Tradition and Devotion

Although it is a place of worship with a serene atmosphere, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows becomes particularly vibrant on August 5th, the day Mértola organizes a pilgrimage to the chapel. This annual event is an important moment of gathering and faith for local inhabitants, who traditionally go to the chapel to ask for clemency and water during the dry periods that affect the Alentejo fields. The devotion to Our Lady of the Snows reflects the community's deep connection to the land and natural cycles, underscoring the continuous role of this building in Mértola's life and traditions.
