The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Neves is situated in an elevated position, atop a hill known as Cerro do Queimado, in the area of Ribeira do Seissal de Cima, near Colos. This tranquil and isolated location offers a wide perspective over the surrounding rural landscape, inviting a stop to appreciate the natural environment.
It is believed that the initial construction of the hermitage dates back to the 16th century. It represents a type of pilgrimage sanctuary that was common in Baixo Alentejo at the end of the Middle Ages. The current dedication to Nossa Senhora das Neves likely occurred later, possibly in the late 18th century. This site remains a point of reference for the community, being the only Marian sanctuary in the Colos area to preserve such a strong local devotion.
The hermitage features a simple architectural structure, typical of the popular religious constructions of the region. It comprises a single nave and a chancel, with a gabled roof. The main facade has a straight lintel portal. Inside, the nave is separated from the chancel by an arch. The altar incorporates a tile panel, dated 1961, illustrating Our Lady with the Child, and some niches can be observed on the side walls.
The hill where the hermitage is located holds vestiges of a much older occupation. Evidence of a fortified settlement that existed during the Middle Ages has been identified on the site. These findings include wall segments, built using the "herringbone" technique, and remains of ancient residential structures within the walled perimeter. These elements reveal the historical importance of this hill, long before the hermitage was built.
The community's connection to the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Neves is particularly evident on August 5th. On this date, a feast and a procession are held annually, tracing the path to the chapel at the top of the hill. This event demonstrates the vitality of local devotion and the hermitage's continued role in the region's cultural and religious life.
