The Entradas Pillory is located in the peaceful village of Entradas, part of the municipality of Castro Verde, in the heart of Alentejo. Its presence is prominent in the centre of the settlement, right in Zeca Afonso Square.
The pillory's location, directly in front of the old Entradas Town Hall, highlights its central role in the village's civic and historical life, making it a reference point for understanding the locality's past.
This monument is a testament to the former municipal autonomy of Entradas. Its construction likely dates back to 1512, a significant period in the village's history, as it was around this time that the locality received a royal charter granted by King Manuel I.
The existence of a pillory symbolised the legal and administrative authority of a municipality. Thus, this example in Entradas marks the village as a centre of local power in the past, a legacy that endures in its history and identity.
Although not preserved in its entirety, the Entradas Pillory presents notable characteristics for those who observe it. What stands out is a section of its shaft, the main column, sculpted in granite.
This shaft is distinctive for its helical flutes that surround it, giving it a particular aesthetic. A curious central hole adds an intriguing element, revealing the craftsmanship and functionality of the original structure.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, the Entradas Pillory is recognized for its heritage value and its importance to Portuguese culture.
After a period away from its original location, the monument was reinstalled in Zeca Afonso Square in 2012. This return signals a remarkable effort by the community to value the village's cultural heritage, allowing its history to continue to be told and appreciated in public space.
