Location

The church is located in the village of Entradas, in southern Portugal, and is considered an important monument in the municipality of Castro Verde.

Architectural style

The building predominantly features a Mannerist style in the body of the church, while the chancel follows the Manueline style. Notable features include the large buttresses on the rear facade, the sober portal, and the pediment with volutes.

Religious significance

In addition to being a place of worship for the local population, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança is also a pilgrimage center.

Internal structure

The church has a single nave and a chancel, both covered by vaults. Inside, the 16th-century mural paintings stand out, depicting Saint Amaro, Saint Sebastian, Saint Lawrence, Saint Lucy, and Saint Blaise. The high altar, in Baroque style, is covered in gilded wood carvings and has niches with images of Saint Mary.

History

The church was built from the expansion of an older building, possibly the chancel. Its foundation dates back to 1575, sponsored by the Bishop of Cape Verde, D. Bartolomeu Leitão. The monument was classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Restoration

In 2009, restoration work was carried out on the gilded wood altar and the triumphal arch of the chapel, due to conservation problems. The restoration was financed by the Fábrica da Igreja Paroquial de Entradas, with support from the Castro Verde City Council and the Entradas Parish Council.

Cultural activities

In 2018, a concert was held in the church during the Endrudanças festival. In 2020, an agreement was signed between the Castro Verde City Council and the Fábrica da Igreja Paroquial for restoration work on religious monuments in the municipality.

Financial support

In 2021, the local authority provided financial support of six thousand euros to the parish to carry out restoration work, including cleaning the roof and painting the exteriors.
