The Menhir of Mac Abraão is located in the Alentejo region, near the village of Vila de Frades, which belongs to the municipality of Vidigueira. This ancient monument is situated in a rural area, specifically in the zone designated as Monte da Vinha. Its location is marked by a typically Alentejo landscape, characterized by extensive agricultural lands and the inherent tranquility of the countryside. The menhir is recognized as a Property of Public Interest, a classification that underscores its historical and patrimonial relevance.

An Ancestral Stone

This menhir is an impressive megalithic piece, an imposing monolith of porphyritic granite. Although currently toppled and partially buried, its visible 2.70 meters in length and 1.50 meters in diameter already attest to its original dimension, estimated at about four meters in height. The menhir stands out for the geometric incisions that adorn it, such as circles and dotted lines, details that reveal the care and work of its prehistoric builders. It is believed that the rock used in its construction may have been extracted from a natural outcrop located approximately one kilometer northwest of the site where it was erected.

The Menhir of Mac Abraão dates back to the Neo-Chalcolithic period, somewhere between the fourth and third millennia BC. The exact function of these monuments continues to be a subject of debate among historians and archaeologists. There are also those who suggest they were erected in honor of deities.
