In the heart of Alentejo, in the village of Cuba, municipality of Cuba, stands the monument to Christopher Columbus. Integrated into the urban development of Cuba and Vila Alva, its position makes it a landmark for visitors to the locality, easily identifiable within the urban environment.
This monument, dedicated to Christopher Columbus, highlights a unique perspective on his origin. Contrary to the most widely disseminated theories, the community of Cuba claims that the navigator, known here as Cristóvão Colon (a name justified by references in papal bulls) was, in fact, Portuguese and was born in Alentejo itself. According to this view, his name would be Salvador Fernandes Zarco, son of Infante D. Fernando, Duke of Beja, and Dona Isabel Gonçalves Zarco. The theory suggests that Columbus deliberately concealed his true identity and his Portuguese roots throughout his life.
The presence of this monument in Cuba symbolizes the ongoing debate and the plurality of theories surrounding the enigmatic figure of Christopher Columbus. The statue invites reflection on the various narratives that have shaped and continue to shape history. Visiting the site offers the opportunity to contemplate an alternative vision, deeply rooted in local culture, that challenges established historical conceptions and stimulates curiosity about the past.
