Located in the small village of Relíquias, in the municipality of Odemira, this church is situated in the Barreiros area, a central point of the locality. Although secluded in its surroundings, the church is flanked by a walled churchyard, giving it a distinct and inviting presence within the village's urban fabric. Its position allows for peaceful access, ideal for a visit focused on serenity and local history.
The Parish Church of Relíquias, also known as the Church of Nossa Senhora de Relíquias or the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, has a history that likely dates back to the 16th century. This temple is a notable example of rural constructions built by the Order of Santiago, to whom it originally belonged, reflecting their influence in the region. Over the centuries, the church underwent several interventions, with the installation of gilded woodcarving altars in the mid-18th century and a remodelling of the main facade in the second half of the same century. The main altar was executed in the 19th century, completing its current profile.
In the 1980s, the building underwent a comprehensive restoration that included the replacement of roofs and floors, the removal of altar tables, the regilding of carved elements, and the installation of a windbreak, ensuring its preservation and suitability for modern times, while always respecting its original essence.
This church stands out for its fusion of architectural styles, namely Manueline, Baroque, and vernacular, which harmoniously coexist in its single-nave structure. On the exterior, the main facade, facing west, features a polylobed gable crowned by a wrought-iron cross and a straight lintel portal framed by a curved pediment, elements that invite careful observation. The bell tower, articulated to the right of the chancel, is topped by a stepped spire and a weather vane, also displaying a clock face.
The interior of the church is particularly rich in elements of sacred art. The main point of interest is the main altar, where one can admire the sumptuous gilded and polychrome woodcarving that adorns the altarpiece. This artistic expression, characteristic of the Baroque, lends a unique brilliance to the space. The side chapels also display gilded and polychrome woodcarving altarpieces, reflecting the aesthetic of the period in which they were added. The stone holy water font, with its octagonal basin and circular base, and the baptistery with its rib vault and keystone featuring a Greek cross, are other details that enrich a visit to the site.
