The Interpretive Centre of Talha Wine is located in Vila de Frades, an Alentejo village in the municipality of Vidigueira. It is situated in Bairro Doutor Alfredo Caetano da Silva, in an area that is part of the characteristic rural and wine-producing landscape of this Alentejo region. Its presence in the village centre makes it a point of reference for those exploring local traditions and heritage.
This centre is dedicated to the interpretation and dissemination of a unique aspect of Portuguese cultural heritage: the know-how of talha wine. This is an ancestral winemaking practice, with a history dating back more than two thousand years, since the time of Roman presence in the territory. Alentejo has been the main guardian of this tradition, where grapes are fermented in large clay vessels, known as talhas. This method, which has remained practically unchanged over generations, is a testament to the persistence and passion in preserving knowledge passed down from parents to children.
Upon visiting the Interpretive Centre, one is invited to a multisensory and historical immersion. Through an engaging narrative, utilising augmented reality technology and interactive panels, it is possible to travel through time and understand the evolution of talha wine, from its Roman origins to the present day. The exhibition path explores the complete production cycle: from the cultivation of the vineyard in the field, through the fermentation process in the wineries with the talhas, culminating in the recreation of a traditional tavern. This environment allows one to smell the scents and aromas, hear the sounds of the vineyard, and discover the proverbs and Alentejo cante that, together, shape the soul of this product.
Talha wine is more than a drink; it is an intrinsic part of the identity and landscape of the municipality of Vidigueira. The Interpretive Centre plays a fundamental role in valuing this product and the people who keep it alive, transmitting the experiences and memories linked to this secular tradition. The persistence of producers in preserving this artisanal method is a testament to the passion and knowledge that, from generation to generation, continue to shape Alentejo's wine culture. This unique know-how even aims to be recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, underlining its universal importance.
