Alvito Castle is located in the parish and municipality of Alvito, in Alentejo, Portugal.
The region where the castle is located has archaeological remains dating back to Roman times, and the first documentary references date back to donations in the 13th century.
The castle served both as a military fortress and as a residence, being considered a fortified palace.
Alvito Castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
The castle presents a mixture of architectural styles, including Islamic, Gothic and Manueline influences.
The castle has a rectangular plan with four cylindrical towers at the corners and an interior courtyard. The Keep, adjacent to the walls, stands out on the northwest side.
The castle has horseshoe arch windows, naturalistic decoration on the capitals and a main door with an inscription indicating the reigns of King John II and King Manuel I.
The castle suffered damage in the 1755 earthquake, but was later restored. The restoration process continued throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
Alvito Castle has been adapted and requalified as an establishment of the Pousadas de Portugal network, and is currently known as Pousada do Castelo de Alvito.
Tourists can visit the castle, explore its walls, appreciate the historical architecture and enjoy a stay at the Pousada do Castelo de Alvito.
