The monument is located on one of the roundabouts accessing the town of Castro Verde, in the area of Castro Verde e Casével, in an open space highly visible to anyone entering or moving within the locality. The sculpture is placed on a stone pavement and surrounded by a small ring of grass, integrating harmoniously into the urban landscape.
Surrounded by vegetation and offering good visual amplitude, this spot stands out for those passing by car as well as for those walking or cycling, functioning as a symbolic landmark of the region's cultural identity.
This iron sculpture pays homage to Alentejo Cante, a traditional musical expression declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. More than an exaltation of the musical style, the monument represents those who gave it voice, men and women from the fields and the mines, central figures in Alentejo life.
The grouping of silhouettes suggests the collective practice of cante, where no one sings alone. The sculptural ensemble captures this spirit of sharing: peasants, miners, reapers, and anonymous figures appear side by side, in a composition that emphasizes the strength of the collective and oral tradition.
The cutouts of the human figures include details such as hats and scarves (accessories identifying rural and female choral groups) and a miner's helmet, placed at the center, as a reference to one of the oldest choral groups in the municipality. These elements reinforce the connection to the land, to work, and to cultural resilience.
The deliberate rusticity of the lines and the choice of iron as material give the sculpture an austere and rooted appearance, reflecting the harshness of rural and mining life, but also its dignity and resilience.
The monument does not aim to represent specific individuals, but rather a collective memory. The figures are anonymous, but they evoke all those who contributed to keeping cante alive, from generation to generation. In the background, a forged iron band contains verses of traditional songs, functioning as a silent homage to all who continue to sing, and to those who have passed away, leaving this living heritage.
This is a place where public art takes on a role of memory, resistance, and celebration of local culture, inviting contemplation and recognition of what unites the community: the shared voice of Alentejo.
