Casa Dona Maria, also known as Palacete Colaço, is located in the village of Castro Verde, in the heart of the Lower Alentejo. Erected on Rua Fialho de Almeida, one of the main streets of the historic centre, it stands out in the local urban landscape. Its imposing presence offers a striking contrast between its elaborate architecture and the vast Alentejo plain that surrounds it, situated within the area of Castro Verde and Casével.
This large private building is recognised as one of Castro Verde's most important architectural landmarks. Its singularity lies in its facade, particularly the rear one, which displays a harmonious blend of styles. Elements of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, and Neo-Islamic inspiration can be observed in its windows and doors. Small towers and multi-level balconies complement the design, contributing to a truly unusual aesthetic.
Built in the 1920s, Casa Dona Maria was notable for the innovative use of cement, a material gaining prominence at the time, which allowed for the creation of complex decorative details. Inside, one can imagine a space filled with fountains, colourful stained glass, and skylights that bathed the rooms in natural light. One of the most interesting features are the elements which, despite being constructed from cement, were artistically conceived to simulate the texture and appearance of marble and wood, revealing a refined aesthetic sense and remarkable technical mastery.
Casa Dona Maria was commissioned by the wealthy landowner Álvaro Romano Colaço, becoming a testament to the prosperity and architectural trends of its era. Its grandeur and distinct style cemented its status as one of Castro Verde's most emblematic buildings. It remains a symbol of the village's cultural richness and constructive ingenuity, inviting contemplation of its historical and artistic value.
