This unique element is located within the urban fabric of Beja, in the area corresponding to the former parishes of Salvador and Santa Maria da Feira. It is situated on the street that gives it its name, Rua da Ancha. Its position within the city makes it a secluded spot with a particular atmosphere, integrated into the daily life of Beja's streets.
The "Passos" (Stations of the Cross) are devotional structures that mark stages of the Passion of Christ, functioning as small altars in public spaces. The Passo da Rua da Ancha is one of the few examples of this type still preserved in Beja, bearing witness to an ancient religious and urban tradition. Its existence dates back to the 17th century.
The structure of the Passo da Rua da Ancha is notable for its composition and materials. It consists of an altar, an altarpiece, and a pediment, elements that are embedded in the wall, creating a harmonious ensemble. The entire work was executed in marble. It is known that its creation, in the year 1675, is attributed to António Nobre, a stonemason native to Beja, which highlights its value as a piece of local art from that period.
Considered one of the most picturesque spots in the city, the Passo da Rua da Ancha invites careful observation. The sobriety of its form, the quality of the marble work, and its integration into the street's architecture give the place a special charm. It is a space that offers a moment of tranquility and reflection, allowing one to appreciate a historical and artistic detail in Beja's urban landscape.
