The Chapel of Santa Luzia is located about 1 kilometer from the village of Alvito, in the Baixo Alentejo region. To get there, the road to the site has recently been paved, facilitating access.
The chapel is situated on top of a hill, surrounded by an olive grove, some of which are around 2,000 years old. The calm and natural environment makes this a good option for those who appreciate rural tranquility.
The building is small and simple in shape, with a rectangular plan. The roof is conical, dome-shaped, and there is a masonry galilee with three arches. The chapel follows a Gothic architectural style.
Inside the chapel, you can observe vestiges of 17th-century frescoes, made by the workshop of José de Escovar. The paintings depict saints and musical angels, with iron frames and cartouches.
The chapel was built between the 15th and 16th centuries, taking advantage of an old religious building. In the 17th century, the mural paintings were made and the porch was probably installed at this time.
The Chapel of Santa Luzia was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1963. This is a place of great historical and cultural value, reflecting the history of Alvito and the region.
In 2019, the chapel was the venue for the exhibition "Ermida", organized by artists Daniel Moreira and Rita Castro Neves. The location was chosen for being a historical and landscape landmark.
The chapel may have been, in the past, a burial site, a watch post and, later, a small chapel, being an important testimony to local history.
