The Memorial to the Alentejo Woman is located in the city of Beja, nestled within the tranquil and landscaped environment of the City Park. This location, in the Santiago Maior and São João Baptista area, provides a serene space for a break, inviting contemplation while enjoying one of the locality's main urban green spaces.
This public art monument is a profound homage to the Alentejo woman and her fundamental role in the history and society of the region. The work celebrates the resilience, strength, and contribution of Alentejo women. Among the multiple female faces represented, one stands out: that of Catarina Eufémia, an emblematic figure and martyr of rural resistance who, after her tragic death in 1954, became a lasting symbol of the struggle for freedom and female emancipation in Portugal.
The memorial is a creation of the Alentejo sculptor Rogério Ribeiro. Standing five meters high, the structure is composed of three tile panels. On these panels, 375 female faces are drawn, a collective representation of the diversity and strength of Alentejo women, with the image of Catarina Eufémia highlighted. The piece, designed to be appreciated from various perspectives, integrates naturally into the landscape of the City Park, inviting close observation of its symbolic and artistic richness.
