The Al-Mu’tamid Memorial is located in a serene and accessible spot within Beja City Park. This green area, situated in the Santiago Maior and São João Baptista zone, offers an environment conducive to strolls and contemplation. Its location within the park harmoniously integrates it into the urban landscape, making it a natural landmark for those exploring the city of Beja.
This memorial honours Al-Mu’tamid, a historical figure of great significance, born in Beja in 1040. He was the only king with origins in this city, a fact that singularly links him to Beja. Al-Mu’tamid distinguished himself not only as a ruler; he was also recognised as one of the most notable poets of his time, during a period when culture and poetry flourished intensely in the Arab courts of the Iberian Peninsula.
Heir to a powerful dynasty, Al-Mu’tamid ascended to the throne of the Taifa of Seville in 1063. His vast reign encompassed a significant territory, including the Algarve, a large part of Alentejo, and important cities such as Cordoba and Seville. His story is that of a man with a benevolent spirit, who knew how to foster gatherings and cultural life in his kingdom.
Al-Mu’tamid’s life, although marked by great cultural and territorial prosperity, had a dramatic ending. He was the last sovereign of the Abbadid dynasty, deposed in 1091 by the Almoravids, a Berber people from North Morocco who took advantage of the fragility of the Taifa kingdoms. This episode led to his exile in Aghmat, where he would die in captivity four years later. The memorial serves as a reminder of his unique connection to Beja and his cultural and political contribution during a period of great historical dynamism in the Iberian Peninsula.
