The Church of Our Lady of Conception is located in Beringel, municipality of Beja. It is situated in a higher, more isolated area on the outskirts of the village, offering a tranquil perspective on the surrounding landscape. It is near the local cemetery, in a peri-urban setting.
This religious building is a testament to different construction eras, reflecting styles such as Mannerist, Baroque, and Neoclassical. Its construction and remodelling took place throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, which gives it an interesting blend of architectural features.
The main façade, facing west, stands out for its Baroque style, with a pediment of striking curves and decorative relief elements, such as medallions and cartouches. It features a marble portal and an elaborate window above. On the right side, the bell tower rises, crowned by a peculiar dome. The façade is enriched with details that invite close observation of the different construction periods.
Upon entering, one finds a single nave that extends to the chancel. The interior reveals a remarkable decorative richness, particularly the abundant presence of gilt carved wood that covers altars and the pulpit. The chancel, narrower and lower than the nave, is separated by a railing and houses an imposing main altarpiece.
This main altarpiece, also in gilt carved wood, features a central throne flanked by Solomonic columns and decorative elements in blue and white tones, culminating in an elaborate tribune. In one of the side chapels, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, it is possible to admire more examples of gilt carved wood and colourful patterned tiles that cover the walls, showcasing the artistic diversity throughout the church's centuries of history.
