The Carmo Church is strategically located in Largo do Carmo, a square in the heart of Beja that gives it a prominent urban setting. Its isolated and prominent position makes it an easily visible landmark in the city, inviting visitors to approach and discover its heritage.
Built between 1755 and 1766, the Carmo Church stands on a historic site, where the Chapel of Saint Catherine once existed, founded in the first half of the 16th century. Its construction, undertaken by the Venerable Third Order of Our Lady of Carmo, marks a phase of renewal and growth in Beja's religious and architectural landscape, later becoming the parish church of São João Baptista.
The Carmo Church is a remarkable example of the transition and coexistence of different architectural styles that marked the 18th century in Portugal. Although its initial planimetry respects the sobriety of the so-called Plain Style (Estilo Chão), which was prominent in the 17th and 18th centuries, the facade and interiors reveal the decorative richness of later periods. Notable elements include Baroque characteristics in the main portal, the delicacy of Rococo in the main altar, and Neoclassical touches in the side altars, creating a visually rich and harmonious ensemble.
Upon entering the church, visitors encounter a single nave, where attention is immediately drawn to the artistic richness. The side walls open into chapels, each with its own altar and altarpieces of gilded and polychrome carving, testaments to the mastery of the artisans of the time. The pulpit, with its elaborate valance, and the main altar, with its Eucharistic throne and alcove, are points of great artistic interest. The chancel is highlighted by mural paintings covering the barrel vault, adding a scenic and spiritual dimension to the space.
