The Hermitage of São Sebastião is located in the city of Beja, on an elevated area that, in times past, was somewhat removed from the old city walls. Its position allows visitors to enjoy a panoramic view over the vast Alentejo plain. It is specifically situated in Rossio de São Sebastião, an area of Beja that maintains a distinctive atmosphere and invites a tranquil pause.
Built during the 16th century, this hermitage possesses a history marked by significant events in the life of the city. Besides its religious function, it served as a burial site for victims of the Black Death, which confers upon it a profound symbolic and memorial value. Its existence attests to the resilience and faith of the local community throughout the centuries.
The building features an architecture of simple and refined lines, reflecting the Mannerist style that spread during its construction period. Inside, visitors can observe artistic elements that enrich the space, such as an 18th-century altarpiece that stands out on the altar. It is also possible to appreciate tile panels from the same period, which add color and patterns to the hermitage's walls. This monument is integrated into Beja's fresco route, suggesting the presence of mural painting, an aspect to explore during the visit.
