The Centre of Archaeology and Arts of Beja, known by the acronym CAAB, is located in one of Beja's parishes, Santiago Maior and São João Baptista. Its urban location in the city allows visitors easy access, integrating into the daily life of the locality and serving as a cultural reference point in the heart of Beja.
Inaugurated in 2021, CAAB was conceived to establish a link between Beja's rich millenary history and the dynamism of contemporary art. This centre functions as a space for dialogue, where archaeology, which reveals the layers of past civilizations, intersects with current art, reflecting the issues and sensitivities of our time. The aim is to create an experience that traverses time, showing the continuity between heritage and new artistic expressions.
CAAB's action has a dual aspect. It is dedicated not only to promoting culture through art, but also to enhancing the value of the archaeological heritage present on the site where it is located. The adjacent remains are an integral part of the experience, underlining the centre's strategy of giving visibility and context to Beja's millenary history, while also presenting contemporary artistic creation. In this way, the centre becomes a point of union between different historical periods and cultural expressions.
CAAB organizes a temporary program, characterized by its diversity and collaboration with other institutions, resulting in an offer that covers various artistic sensibilities. In addition to exhibitions, the centre encourages research in the fields of Art History and Archaeology, through the promotion of meetings and other initiatives. Its activity also has a strong pedagogical dimension, seeking to actively involve the community in the discovery and reflection on heritage and art.
