The Chapel of Our Lady of Piety is located in the city of Beja, in the area of Santiago Maior and São João Baptista. Its slightly elevated position lends it an atmosphere of tranquility, offering a small, serene refuge within the urban context. The chapel is harmoniously integrated into the city's fabric, inviting a moment of pause and introspection.
From its genesis, the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety was conceived as a place of prayer and recollection. Its construction, with simple and unpretentious lines, reflected its original function: to serve as a temple for pilgrims and penitents seeking a space for devotion. This atmosphere of humility and quietude, far from daily distractions, still provides an inviting atmosphere for contemplation and spiritual connection today.
Inside the chapel, its apparent exterior simplicity gives way to details of artistic value. Visitors can admire a set of notable paintings, attributed to André de Reinoso and dated to the first half of the 17th century. Throughout its history, the building underwent significant interventions, such as the works carried out in the first half of the 18th century. In these renovations, materials were reused from earlier constructions, a testament to the evolution of the space and the construction practices of the time, visible in elements such as the North wing of the old cloister and the chapel's main façade.
