Located in the Zambujeiro area, in Moura, Atalaia Gorda occupies an elevated point in the Alentejo landscape. This strategic position, at approximately 192 meters in height, once allowed for a vast observation over the surrounding rural territory, marked by plains and some mountainous areas. The site, crucial for the region's defense in medieval times, today offers a setting that invites reflection on the past of this Alentejo.

Distinct Past

Atalaia Gorda was built around the end of the 13th century, forming part of the set of four watchtowers created during the reign of D. Dinis. Its primary function was surveillance and visual communication, essential for the defense of the then sensitive border with Castile. It is known that this watchtower was distinguished by having a quadrangular plan, a characteristic that differentiated it from some of its better-known counterparts. Its architecture, although simple, was designed for military effectiveness, built with small stone masonry.

Legacy and Significance

Even if it is not found in its original integrity today, Atalaia Gorda remains an important historical-cultural landmark. What remains on site, including vestiges of a surrounding wall, serves as a testament to its relevance in the medieval defensive network.
