This old convent is located in a quiet rural area, slightly set back from the center of Alvito village, specifically in the area known as Monte de São Francisco. Its position is prominent and isolated, integrated into the surrounding rural landscape. The site has deep historical roots, as its placement suggests the prior existence of an ancient occupation, possibly a Roman villa.
The history of this site dates back to the 13th century, with records of a Benedictine convent that may have been established over the remains of a possible Roman villa. The Franciscan convent was founded in 1515, at the initiative of D. Rodrigo Lobo, the 3rd Baron of Alvito, who chose the site for the friars' settlement. The church, built in the first half of the 16th century, served as the pantheon for the founding family. The complex underwent enlargements and alterations over the centuries, notably in the 18th century with works on the chancel and in the 19th century, when a residential area was added.
Of the old conventual complex, comprising a church and cloister, three wings currently remain. The church features an organized plan with a nave and chancel, preceded by an endonarthex. In a space that would have been the old vegetable garden, there is a separate chapel dedicated to the Magi.
The building reflects its long history through the blend of architectural styles. Gothic elements can be observed in the interior vaults, while the overall plan organization, portals, and windows display characteristics of late Renaissance and Alentejo Baroque. The Chapel of the Magi adds a Mannerist touch, and the residential area, a later addition, features Romantic traits.
Among the most notable elements are the uniqueness of the exterior portals and the church portal, as well as the complexity of the ribbed vaults that cover some of the interior spaces. The walls are made of masonry, complemented by stonework details in the most relevant elements, such as portals and vaults.
