The Old Church of Misericórdia is situated in the heart of Vidigueira's Historic Centre. It occupies a central position within the town's urban fabric. Its main facade faces west, while its side faces Praça da República (Republic Square), one of the town's significant public spaces.
Although the institution of Misericórdia in Vidigueira has ancient roots, possibly dating back to the late 15th century, the church building visible today has more recent origins. Its initial construction dates back to 1592. However, after a fire, the church underwent a significant reconstruction in 1688, acquiring the form that largely remains today.
Upon entering the church, visitors will find several elements of artistic and decorative interest. Of particular note are the tile panels that adorn the interior. In the chancel, an image of Christ Crucified can be observed. On the altar table, the image of the dead Christ stands out, flanked by figures depicted in bas-relief. It also features an ancient door in the area that would have been the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, dating from the late 18th century.
