The Casarão site is located in the municipality of Ourique, nestled within the peaceful Alentejo landscape. It is situated in an area that offers an atmosphere of serenity, inviting a calmer visit focused on the historical remains. Its presence in Ourique's rural surroundings evokes an ancient connection to the territory.
Casarão is a remarkable example of a funerary monument, whose origin dates back to the late 8th century BC or early 7th century BC, during the Iron Age. Its base structure features a circular plan, approximately 6.90 meters in diameter, and included a central rectangular chamber connected by a corridor. Although only the base is preserved today, this construction would once have been covered by a large hemispherical mound, known as a mamoa, which would have made it stand out prominently in the landscape of the time.
Traditionally, monuments like Casarão were intended for the individual inhumation of important figures within their communities. However, excavations at this site revealed a peculiarity: in addition to the burial found at the center of the structure, a second inhumation was identified. This additional grave, covered by stones, was located in an area marginal to the main funerary complex, offering a glimpse into the complex mortuary practices of that era.
Casarão is a site with free access, allowing visitors to discover this heritage independently. Its location on private land makes visits possible thanks to the collaboration of the owners. For this reason, it is essential that visitors actively contribute to its cleanliness and conservation, ensuring that this important historical remnant of the Alentejo is respected and preserved for future generations.
